Purpose
The purpose of the HOSA organization is to develop leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition, which is an integral part of the Health Science Education instructional program.  

Mission 
The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science education students, therefore, helping the student meet the needs of the health care community.

Goals
The goals that HOSA believes are vital to each member are:

  • To promote physical, mental and social well being.
  • To develop effective leadership qualities and skills.
  • To develop the ability to communicate more effectively with people.
  • To develop character.
  • To develop responsible citizenship traits.
  • To understand the importance of pleasing oneself as well as being of service to others.
  • To build self-confidence and pride in one's work.
  • To make realistic career choices and seek successful employment in the health care field.
  • To develop an understanding of the importance in interacting and cooperating with other students and organizations.
  • To encourage individual and group achievement.
  • To develop an understanding of current health care issues, environmental concerns, and survival needs of the community, the nation and the world.

Advisor and Funding Letter 

                                       
Hello to our fabulous New York State HOSA local advisors. I am sending this note to advise each of you of the following funding opportunities and challenges - I encourage you to read the entire note and apply for everything that relates to your chapter or school.

There are many training opportunities for advisors (new and experienced). I found this
“Earn Cash Make a Difference” under  www.hosa.org à  JOIN à Affiliation Packet 
                      CVS Health Foundation has partnered with HOSA chapters across the nation!
                                              EARN CASH & MAKE A DIFFERENCE 
HOSA is partnering with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids to take down tobacco by providing FREE online training! Learn about the dangers of tobacco use, e-cigarettes and vapes, and how YOU can #BeTheFirst tobacco-free generation.
 HOSA Membership-Wide Contest | August 6 – December 15, 2018
 • The first 50 chapters or Advisors to provide FREE Taking Down Tobacco 101 trainings and report them online receive $100
 • Chapters that train 75 youth or more are entered to win one of three $1,000 cash prizes.
                          I hope New York HOSA chapters will earn a share of these funds.
As your state advisor, I am challenging each local chapter to encourage another school to start a “New HOSA Chapter”.  Use your social media to spread the word about New York HOSA FHP. Visit another school and share your expertise in regard, to HOSA Future Health Professionals. Use the www.hosa.org site in your presentation. Send in pictures of your chapter members meeting with other schools while you recruit for New York HOSA FHP. Please send correspondence to stateadvisor@newyorkhosa.org
The chapter/person that brings in the greatest number of new chapters- (confirmed by the chapter advisor of the new school)- will be honored at SLC.
I also challenge you to grow your chapter by 10% from the number of members you had last year. Chapters who experience a 10% increase in members, will be recognized at the ILC.
 
New York State HOSA has earned an incentive award to assist “new chapters”. NEW chapters with ten or more members are eligible for a rebate of $242.00-
1.      The chapter must pay their national and state dues before November 15, 2018. To be eligible for the first round of rebates- first round of rebates will occur after November 30, 2018. (The request to CTE for release of funds is November 30, 2018) If funds remain, a second round of rebates will occur after March 31, 2019  
Rebates for $200 per school with HOSA chapters toward travel expenses incurred for FLC and SLC.
1.      School must attend FLC or SLC with ten or more members
2.      School must be in good standing (dues are paid in full, hotel fees are paid)
3.      Travel expense must be submitted to stateadvisor@newyorkhosa.org or handed in at the registration desk at FLC or ILC. Travel expense requests for rebates must be on school letter head, submitted by the chapter advisor.
4.      Rebates will be mailed for FLC after November 30, 2018 (The request to CTE for funds on 11-30, 2018)
5.      Rebates for SLC will be mailed after June 15, 2019 (The request for these funds from CTE will occur on June 15, 2019)
6.      I encourage you to engage other schools from your area, in your travel plans. Combining funds may cover the cost for several chapters sharing a bus.
 
 
 
   SLC Scholarships: New Opportunities for Competitive events
                                     I am happy to announce that we have partnered with 
                                                         Johnson and & Wales University.
They will sponsor the following events: Biomedical Lab Science, Health Education, HOSA Bowl, Sports Medicine, and Public Health. They will offer scholarships in the following amounts:
                                 First place $1,000, Second place $750, Third Place $500
These awards are renewable for four (4) years, making their total values $4,000, $3,000, and $2,000 respectively.
This is an exceptional addition for our members. Please share this with your members.
 
Advisor Training will be offered at both FLC and SLC. Advisors should bring an electronic device to utilize the internet while exploring the presented materials. Advisors in attendance, will become “Certified New York State HOSA Local Advisors”. I look forward to meeting with all of you at these two training events for our local advisors. 
Training will include:
1.      The role of the advisor at the
a.      a) New York State HOSA< Future Health Professionals Fall Leadership Conference
b.      b) New York State HOSA, Future Health Professionals Spring Leadership Conference
c.       c) HOSA, Future Health Professionals, International Leadership Conference
d.      At the local level
2.      Support services for advisors (view www.hosa.org under “About”; “Join”; “Advisors”; many training opportunities exist at the national website. There are webinars and valuable information for all: instructions on how to affiliate; instructions on how to use the management system; how to prepare your students for competitive events; how to choose the right competitive event; where to phone when you do not recall your chapter # and login password; and more)
3.      Creation of a mentoring program for new advisors
4.      Encouraging membership growth of local chapters
5.      Community service and involvement for leadership opportunities
6.      National Pediatric Cancer Foundation (see website www.npcf.org) Offers educational experiences, in regard, to pediatric cancers; opportunities to shadow oncology practitioners; and community service through service at NPCF functions and through fundraising efforts. (rewards for students who accumulate donations of $25 or more).
